If you're already on vitamin B12 injections and struggling to get them booked, we can give them here, £25 all in, at our pharmacy in Aberdeen city centre, with same day appointments available.
Given by a GPhC-registered independent prescribing pharmacist. No GP referral needed and you don't need to be registered with us. Evening and weekend appointments available by arrangement.
Who is this service for?
This is for people who are over the age of 18 and need their vitamin B12 injections.
That usually means you:
Are vegan or vegetarian or don't get enough B12 in your diet
Have a diagnosis of pernicious anaemia
Have an absorption problem such as Crohn's, or after bariatric surgery
Have been started on B12 by your GP and need ongoing doses
Take certain medication that can reduce B12 in the body for example Metformin, Proton Pump Inhibitors (eg Omeprazole) or Nitrous Oxide
If you haven't been diagnosed yet
Signs and symptoms of low b12 include:
tiredness
breathlessness
headaches
indigestion
loss of appetite
diarrhoea
a sore or red tongue, sometimes with mouth ulcers
muscle weakness
Low B12 has several possible causes and they're treated differently, so the first step is finding out which applies to you.
Persistent tiredness has a long list of possible explanations, and B12 is only one of them. Starting injections without knowing the cause can also cover up a problem that needs investigating properly. If you have neurological symptoms eg numbness, pins and needles, memory issues then we would advise speaking to your GP in the first instance.
How to get Vitamin B12 in your diet
Vitamin B12 is not produced in the body but you can find it in:
Meat
Fish (eg Salmon and Cod)
Milk and other dairy products
Eggs
For dietary related B12 deficiency there is the option of using daily pill form of Vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin) or a 6 monthly injection if clinically appropriate.
Is it safe?
Generally very well tolerated. Most common are mild and short lived: soreness, redness or slight swelling at the injection site.
Less commonly: headache, nausea, dizziness or itching. Serious allergic reactions are rare.
A small number of people are sensitive to cobalt, which vitamin B12 contains. This usually shows as a skin reaction and can appear immediately or up to three days later. Tell us if you've ever reacted to a B12 injection or have a known cobalt allergy, and we'll assess it with you.
If anything concerns you afterwards, contact us, your GP, or NHS 24 on 111.
