Ear Wax Removal in Aberdeen — No NHS Referral Required

If you're struggling with muffled hearing, a blocked feeling in your ear, or a persistent ringing sound, ear wax build-up is likely the cause. The NHS no longer routinely offers ear wax removal in most areas, which means many people across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire are left looking for a safe, affordable private option.

At Waverley Pharmacy, our trained pharmacist provides professional ear microsuction right here in Aberdeen. Microsuction is widely regarded as the gold standard method for ear wax removal — it is precise, safe, and does not require water or ear drops. Most appointments are completed in a single visit, and you can walk out with your hearing restored.

Do You Need Ear Wax Removal?

You may benefit from microsuction if you are experiencing any of the following:

Muffled or reduced hearing in one or both ears

A feeling of fullness or pressure in your ear

Ringing or buzzing sounds (tinnitus)

Earache or mild discomfort

Itching inside the ear canal

Difficulty hearing when using hearing aids

Dizziness or a feeling of imbalance

Ear wax removal by microsuction is suitable for most adults, including those with a history of ear problems, perforated eardrums, or hearing aid users. If you are unsure whether it is right for you, our pharmacist can advise during your consultation.

What Is Ear Microsuction?

Ear microsuction is a safe, modern technique for removing excess ear wax using a small, gentle suction device. Unlike traditional ear syringing — which involves flushing water into the ear canal — microsuction uses no water at all, making it cleaner, more precise, and suitable for a wider range of patients.

At Waverley Pharmacy, we use a video otoscope camera during the procedure. This allows the pharmacist to see clearly inside your ear canal in real time, and also means we can show you exactly what is happening throughout the appointment.

The procedure typically takes between 15 and 30 minutes, and there is no recovery time — you can return to your normal activities immediately afterwards.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

Step 1 — Book Online

Select a date and time that suits you through our online booking system. A £20 consultation fee is taken at the time of booking. This is fully deductible from the cost of any treatment on the day. Before your appointment please use Olive Oil ear drops for at least 3 days but ideally 7 days prior to appointment. This helps soften the wax and enables a higher chance of successful ear wax removal. The drops can be acquired from Waverley Pharmacy if you need.

Step 2 — Otoscope Assessment

Your pharmacist will begin by examining your ear canal using a video otoscope. This quick, painless assessment allows us to confirm the level of wax build-up and recommend the most appropriate course of treatment.

Step 3 — Microsuction Procedure

Using a fine, low-pressure suction device, your pharmacist will gently remove the ear wax. The video otoscope means the procedure is carried out with complete visibility throughout. Most patients experience immediate relief.

Step 4 — Post-Procedure Check

Once the wax has been cleared, your pharmacist will carry out a second otoscope examination to confirm the ear canal is clear and the eardrum is healthy.

Step 5 — Aftercare Advice

We will provide you with clear aftercare guidance before you leave, including advice on preventing future wax build-up and when to return if symptoms recur.

Ear Microsuction Aberdeen FAQs

What is ear wax?

Ear wax is a naturally produced physiological substance that protects the ear canal. It is a combination of dead skin cells, cerumen from the glands in the outer ear and various other substances (eg airborne dust particles)

How much does ear wax removal cost at Waverley Pharmacy?

A consultation costs £20, which is fully deductible from the treatment price on the day. Treatment for both ears costs £50 in total, meaning the effective consultation cost is nothing if you proceed with treatment.

Do I need to use ear drops before my appointment?

We recommend olive oil drops for at least 3 days (but ideally 7 days) beforehand as it can make removal easier. If you require help sourcing this please pop into the pharmacy before your appointment.

Is ear microsuction painful?

Ear microsuction is generally well tolerated and should not be painful. Some patients notice a mild sensation or hear the sound of the suction device, but discomfort is minimal. The procedure is considerably gentler than older ear syringing methods.

How long does the appointment take?

Most appointments take between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on the amount of wax present in both ears. There is no recovery time, and you can drive and return to normal activities immediately after your appointment.

Can I book if I wear hearing aids?

Yes. Ear wax build-up is very common in hearing aid wearers because the device can prevent the natural migration of wax out of the ear canal. Microsuction is the recommended removal method for hearing aid users and is safe and effective for this purpose.

Is a GP referral required?

No GP referral is required. You can book directly online at any time. If we identify anything during your assessment that requires further medical attention, we will advise you accordingly and, where appropriate, write to your GP.

Does the NHS offer ear wax removal in Aberdeen?

In most parts of Scotland, the NHS no longer routinely provides ear wax removal. Many GP practices have stopped offering ear syringing altogether. As a result, private clinics and pharmacies like Waverley Pharmacy now provide this service to patients across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire.
