What is Minoxidil?

Minoxidil spray is a clinically proven treatment to combat hair loss. It works by widening blood vessels (a vasodilator) to increase blood flow and nutrient delivery to hair follicles. This stimulates prolonged growth phases and reactivates shrunken follicles. It must be used continuously; stopping treatment will result in the loss of any regrown hair within a few months.

Male pattern hair loss is a common condition in which men experience thinning of the hair on the scalp, often resulting in a receding hairline and/or balding on the top of the head. This condition is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic factors and a particular hormone, DHT (dihydrotestosterone). DHT causes a decrease in the growth phase and thinning of the hair (see picture). This leads to male pattern hair loss. These changes can start to occur in some men in their 20s and become more common with age. Once hair loss has occurred over a long period of time, the hair may be permanently lost.

What is male pattern hair loss?

No - Finasteride is not suitable for everyone.

It is only suitable for men over the age of 18 with male pattern baldness. It is important for us to exclude other conditions which can cause hair loss or thinning. There are many conditions that contraindicate use of Finasteride - our pharmacist will go through this during your assessment.

Yes, although many medications have side effects the MHRA have recently issued new guidance over side effects of Finasteride. It is associated with depression, suicidal ideation and sexual dysfunction which may persist after treatment is stopped. It is very important if you have any history of these conditions that you mention it to our independent prescribing pharmacist during the face to face consultation.
